WELCOME to my 'WRITINGS'.

This page may interest you if you enjoy reading short stories, articles or poems - I hope you find what you like and like what you find - inspiration or just fun.

CARLOTTA'S DAUGHTER.

Carlotta's Daughter introduces Jamie Davis, a young man who joins the Royal Navy to see the world. The death of his mother and severe disability of a war ravaged father, together with a pre-destined future of work in the coal pits of South Wales, drives Jamie to seek adventure on the high seas. Things do not turn out as he imagines.

He becomes firm friends with an older, street-wise Londoner, Derek Latchbrook. Latch bucks the class system of the time by romancing an officer's daughter with the inevitable disastrous result. Introduction into the sleazy life in the ports of the Meditereanian drags Jamie into adult-hood, but tragedy and loss robs the young man of his hopes of finding a family substitute in the Navy.

RED ICE. Unpublished Thriller.

Red Ice finds Jamie (now a Sub-lieutenant and electronics expert) being sent to help out on a British submarine heading for the Arctic.
Fresh from a near disastrous confrontation with a Russian nuclear submarine and emotionally affected by his marriage break-up, Jamie digs deep into his reserves to make the trip. He is glad to find an old ship-mate, Delaney, is a part of the crew but the big Irishman seems incredulous when he finds out that Jamie is married - the only married man on the ship.

A film crew is taken aboard at Copenhagen to apparently make a recruiting film. Jamie, an electronics expert, soon discovers that all is not as it should be with the submarine's equipment. Attempted sabotage, mysterious attacks on his person and a death on-board create a stressful situation in the confines of the ice-bound boat.
Changing plans and actions by the Commanding Officer re-inforce Jamie's fears that Captain Jennings is about to become a traitor. Fitted with a revolutionary piece of navigating equipment, the submarine becomes a target for Soviet forces - but how do they know?

Unwilling to accept that Jennings is about to hand over his ship and all its crew to the Russians, Jamie turns to the First Lieutenant. Phillips is a hostile character, unskilled in his job but uncannilly knowledgeable in the new equipment. Jamie finds allies in his attempts to reach the truth from Sergeant Greg Murray and Swimmer Willy Hearn, two Special Boat Section marines on detachment to provide film opportunities.

The plot and the book's characters move headlong from one crisis to another, bringing to life the espionage riddled and fearful scene behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. The story reaches a literally explosive end in a confrontation that could well have occurred for real. This, so far unpublished thriller, follows on from Brian Thomas's first novel, Carlotta's Daughter. It will leave you wondering whether the incident really happened - so much seems to fit in with the scant knowledge that we, the public, were allowed to know of this dark period in history. But, will we ever know? Be sure to read the book and decide for yourself.

MISCHIEF. Unfinished Thriller.

Mischief. Lieutenant Jamie Davis teams up with the SBS characters that featured in his previous book, RED ICE. Charged with investigating strange piracy acts in the South China Sea, the team train to use primative underwater torpedo chariots as a means of infiltrating a coral-reef the pirates use as a base.
Political intrigue and National jockeying for rights to access the regions rich oil and mineral reserves result in an inevitable confrontation between the powers in the region that is only settled by a violent and explosive face down.

THE RUNNER.

The Runner was written 25 years ago as an inspirational help to (of all things)a group of Amway participants. The image, painted by Brian, was taken from a picture of an English middle distance runner??

I believe the words could be helpful for anyone embarking on any project that required stamina - stickability - a virtue that has to be present when the road ahead is daunting, or when circumstances conspire to throw you off your chosen path. Click here or on the image to see the poem.
